Why college?

As I eagerly anticipate graduating from college next May, Ive recenly been speculating the question: What would I have been doing with my life if I didnt go to college? If i didnt spend the last 4 and half, almost 5 years working towards a degree full time?

To be honest I have no idea. Part of me believes that GODS-ULTIMATE-GRAND-PLAN-FOR-HAROLD'S-LIFE is of course to be a rich successful artist, entertainer, whatever else. So even if I was just SO defiant and rebellious and KANYE-ISH that i said "Forget the Belmont scholarship, I'm a rapper!" I still believe I would have ended up pursuing music just as hard and faithfully as I have in college and continued to persist despite setbacks, just as I am now. But think about it, I would have lived at home with my parents, been FORCED to work full time. And yall know i CANT keep a job (CLICK HERE FOR A LIST OF PREVIOUS JOBS), and i CANT live at home with my parents... So, me completely skipping out on the whole college thing just WASNT happening.

TRUTHFULLY, my initial plan for college was to use it as a front until I got a record deal and I could drop out hahaha! I never really told anybody that but I was SO sure that my band Biscuits and Gravy was SO close to a record deal back in 2006. And 4 years was too long for me to be in college because I would already be financially set with a stable music career before I graduated!

I mean cmon.. I had a full ride at Belmont all from me busting my BUTT in high school. I had a name for myself in the city. It was TIME to pursue my passion and go all out. I had it figured out. Take classes at Belmont, live in the dorms, all while recording my music, playing my shows, traveling, and ultimately getting a recording contract.

Needless to say that never happened, and 4 years wasnt even enough time for me to get out this place hahaha.

So back to the original question: Where would I be now if I didnt go to college?

Who cares. Cuz I wouldnt be exactly where i am now, thats for sure. And right now Im happier than Ive ever been. Ive never felt wiser, more prepared and more optimistic. I know I am exactly where I need to be in life, and everything has worked out in this way for a reason. Yea, music is my life, and I believe beyond a doubt that I will achieve success with it, but I also know that college was and is a crucial part of my journey and growing process. Im amazed how much Ive matured, and even more so how much Ive learned about the music industry overall. Hell, I dont wanna get signed anymore lol, not until i have all the bargaining power.

In addition to what Ive learned, the greatest aspect of college for me is the relationships: The friendships, the falling outs, the drama, all of that. Ive met people here in college that I will maybe never talk to again that have affected me or my personality in some way. There are people Ive met in college that I will continue to work with and remain close with the rest of my life. Out of those relationships come a range of emotions, experiences, and knowledge that helped shaped who I am.

For me to speculate my life without college, I would have to take away all that I have gained from it. And I do not feel like me attending college made me miss out on any particularly beneficial opportunities elsewhere. College isnt for everybody, but it is/was for me. I will probably never even use my Business Administration degree, but my overall college experience is irreplaceable and will benefit me for years to come.

FUTURE LOVES THE KIDS!

Just posted a clip on youtube from me and Sir Lazenby's performance at Asociacion Hogar Niños por un Nuevo Planeta, a home for sexually abused children in Bogota, Colombia. Most meaningful show I've ever done.... Ive always had a passion for children, so doing this for them was really like a dream come true for me. To these kids, I was a superstar, a rich celebrity, a rapper from the United States with expensive sunglasses, literally the sickest Nikes they had ever seen, and a blackberry phone hahaha. They didn't speak a lick of english, but they danced to every track and mimicked my hooks the best they could so they could sing along. After my set, Me and Lazenby signed autographs for the kids on torn up notebook paper with pencils and crayons. You could tell it just made their world. One of the kids asked me to show him what kind of phone I had, so I pulled out my berry 9700, and they all went "OOOHHHH!" It was surreal. Be thankful for the life you have. Anyway, check the clip out. We have professional video from it as well, but this was just a little clip my boy Marlowe recorded on my flip cam.

Im really reluctant to give my opinion on new music nowadays cuz theres just too much new music, too many ppl thinkin they worthy of an opinion, too many haters, too many biters.... and a nigga gotta do me right now. However, I had to make an exception tho for Bun B's new album Trill OG that dropped yesterday. It has a personal importance and relevance to my life right now. Kinda like the soundtrack to match the emotions you feelin. Needless to say, I was hype that Source Magazine gave it 5 mics, calling it a classic. You can say what you want about the Source no longer being relevant, and even disagree with the rating, but dont knock it without givin it a listen. Ima leave it at that. Anyway, if you in the mood for some honest lyricism, bangin beats, and just plain ole great music, then support the King of the Trill and cop Trill OG.

Most of yall know Im finally back in America. I dont quite know yet how my 34 days in Colombia has changed/affected me or WILL change/affect me, but I do know it was definitely life altering. Im eager to see how the experience reflects in my new songs and even my outlook on life. Im still in Houston with Lazenby and Grady, and SO ready to get back in the studio in another day or so.

Heres my final thoughts on the trip:

1) I LOVE AMERICA. Ive never felt so patriotic. I finally understand the benefits of being an American, no matter where I travel to. I am so fortunate. I grew up in LUXURY compared to some of the places I visited in Colombia.

2) Everyone needs to visit another country. Its culture shock. Its just important to see. It helps to put things in perspective. America is ONE country in the world. Theres so much left to see and experience that is culturally, politically, and socially just DIFFERENT. And that difference has helped to expand the way I think about the world and my place in it. If you've traveled outside the country a bunch then this isnt for u. But i know tons of ppl who never have and hate to say some that probably never will.

3) I have to be huge WORLDWIDE. Every plane i get off, no matter the country, i need to be recognized. Lets just be real. I still remember back in 2006 when my goal was to take over Belmont University. Then 2008 it was Nashville. Then the South. Fast forward to 2010 and its the WORLD. Hearing Black Eyed Peas playing in a club in the middle of an INDIGENOUS VILLAGE was absolutely mind blowing. I bet Will.I.Am and the crew dont even know theyve reached such an obscure, unknown place. Hell, they probably do. But yall know what Im sayin. With all our differences, it was easiest to relate to many Colombians just from music. I love my calling as an artist, and I am without a doubt taking it as far as God allows.

4) I am too blessed. It still hasnt set it all that I've done in Colombia and I dont know when it will, but the opportunity was once in a lifetime. BIG thank you to Brandon Fokken and the family, Dad Lazenby, and Grady and Robb bein the perfect friends for me to share the experience with. Real talk, me and the crew grew some BALLS on this trip hahahaha thats the only way to say it! This wasnt LA, it wasnt Vegas, ATL, or NY... it was freakin COLOMBIA.....

In closing, all i have left to say is just get ready.

VIVA COLOMBIA!

YO! Im back to blogging again finally. I been doin it BIG with Lazenby and Grady here in Colombia. So far we've been to Manizales, Ibague, Los Nevados National Park, and now we're back in Bogota, our home base basically. With the exception of Los Nevados (how many days can u REALLY stand to be in the mountains??) everything else has been CRAZY! I LOVE COLOMBIA! Everyone thats been here told me i would, and its just undeniable. The landscape is gorgeous. Ive seen everything from snow cap mountains in the Andes, to partyin at local clubs more poppin than ANY parties in the US! These people know how to paaaarrrtttaaayyy. Hell, yesterday was a holiday and they closed off the main streets for people to ride bikes, jog, and rollerskate... WHHAAATTT?? DOPENESS!! Just the cultural differences are enough to make me appreciate the heck out of this country.

Me and Lazenby balled out at the Adidas store here in Bogota yesterday cuz apparently Adidas is the STUFF here. So u already know we gotta stunt everywhere we go, South America being no exception at all haha. And after looking like CRAP in the mountains for four days without internet and ties to CIVILIZATION, it was time to get back on it. We copped some eexxxtrraa dope jackets that just adds to the list of reason why we turning heads here lol. FRRREEESSHHH

ANYWAY, for the friends, fans, and haters, Im writing more than ever, thinking more than ever, grinding harder than ever. Me and the whole fam. Lazenby and Grady too. This was exactly what we needed this summer. And i cant wait for everyone, including myself, to see how this experience is reflected in our next project and future endeavors.

More importantly is the connections we are all making in the country. Since Dad Lazenby and Brandon Fokken are so well connected here, we are definitely taking advantage of this to the fullest. Also Ive gained more of a WORLD mentality... meaning just thinking outside the box, outside just america. This bein my first time out the country, Im just now seeing first hand the differences and similarities in tastes in music, fashion, etc. Its interesting to listen to what from America is huge here, what artists ppl know, what brands and labels are the most popular. Like Adidas! I cant stand Adidas! but after being here and seeing the EXCLUSIVES that they prolly only sell outside of America for the most part, it really gave me a new found respect for it. The Nike store SUCKED lolol. Oh and the Black Eyed Peas (of course), Eminem, and 50 Cent are all big here. Alotta ppl i talked to didnt even know Kanye West lol. INTERESTING. Point? Forget JUST America, me Lazenby and Grady goin GLOBAL, baby. This was all i needed to see to get me to think even BIGGER

Being here is also making me grateful for my life. Ive seen alot of poverty. I keep forgetting its a third world country. Alot of times we are in nicer areas or downtown or secluded from areas of extreme poverty, but its hard to miss. From volunteering at a foster home with kids last week to seeing poor street vendors hustling is just crazy. Ive been so fortunate. My entire family has been.

I gotta get outta here tho, we goin to the Amazon in a few days so hopefully thats when Ill get some time to upload more pics and vids. I got a ton. Shout out to my nigga Flip HD!! LOL miss all my ppl back in the US. My family, my baby Henna, and all my people! Holla at yall later

YO! Its been a minute. I just cant be creative, take a break from society, AND do this online stuff, u know?

ANYWAY... im at the airport now waiting to board my flight to Bogota, Colombia. This is a trip of FIRSTS. Lets start with this red eye flight. Ive never had a red eye flight. How DOPE is a freakin midnight flight!?!?!? My kinda thing! Early morning crap is overrated.

Its also my FIRST time travelin out the country... i am TOOOO excited. I have no IDEA what to expect. U can watch movies, look at pics and vids, and even talk to the ppl that been there. But my own 5 senses just cant place it. I just dont know that feeling of being in another world , which is really what this kinda is like. Diff culture, language, money.... OH YEA I GOT PESOS, BABY!!! Hahaha for real tho, theres just sooooo much goin thru my head

Oh and this is my FIRST time using a passport and goin thru customs. Apparently the customs part is NOT the bizness, but its all part of the experience. And im def down for the experience. I'll be goin so many places in Colombia. Bogota of course. thats gonna be our home base for the month pretty much. Wonder what the city's gonna be like. I dont care where i am, the idea of a city just sounds so comfortable to me hahaha.
We are also goin to PNN Los Nevados which is on top of the mountains, baby! snow and all!! Hahaha also Parques Naturales Gorgona.... Look... i was gon explain all them and give lil facts and details... but if u havent noticed, its all in spanish and i wanna use up the last bit of my lazy english while i can hahaha

Bags packed. Fresh haircut. A few new fits. Time to hit the road. I'm leavin Nashville yall. On the road as we speak. Doin alotta thinkin cuz there's just so much to get done in 2 months. But at the same time, I know this summer will exceed every expectation. In August when I return to the 615 after livin it up in Vegas, filming in Colombia, and recording in Houston, I will all be a new man. This will def be a summer Grady, the Sir and I will never forget

In all cheesiness, let the journey continue lol. But in all realness, I REALLY have an excuse now to NOT answer phone calls and texts hahahahahaha jk jk jk hit me up yall. So, apparently theres been some major flooding going on around Nashville and in alot of Tennessee. But the few times Ive been outside this past weekend, i havent seen anything like the horrific floating cars and trailers on I-24 i saw on the news and all over twitter.... instead just a few puddles of rain outside my apartment and a pretty pathetic looking sky. Nevertheless, this has allowed me to catch up on rest from crazy crazy crazy last week.

During my lazy weekend, Ive been spending alot of time tending to my high top. Yup. Sometimes life gets so crazy I no longer have time just stare at it in the mirror for hours like I used to. Next month will be me and my high top fade's 2 year anniversary together. SOOOO i just thought I'd take yall through a then and now of me and my hated, loved, envied, worshipped, ridiculed, but never-forgotten FLAT TOP

2 summers ago, an angel came to me in a dream and said,

So the next morning I went to the barbershop, and asked for the hair cut that would change my life...

For the longest, I had to get used to people laughing at me everywhere I went

But not before long, I soon figured out that as long as I rocked it with confidence, no one could really say much

However, I was a broke Kroger employee so I couldnt afford getting my high top edged up every week like i needed to

So i started looking ROUGH

But a trip to LA with the Lazenbys was all it took for me to see the importance of the high top being treated like luxury

Finally people started taking notice of my amazing hair.

Thats cuz now I never leave the house with my hair lookin anything short of this....

Country music sweat-a-thon

I am proud to say that today I finished the country music half marathon today!

13.1 miles of pure accomplishment

Hahaha I honestly didnt realize what I was gettin myself into. This was my first marathon over 3 miles haha, and it didnt set in until I got dressed and ready this morning at freakin 4 sumthin AM!! Dad Lazenby challenged Grady and I to run it since b4 we went to LA this january. When we got to Centennial Park this morning and saw all the 30,000 other runners lining up, then it OFFICIALLY hit me. I must say tho, this has been such a valuable, rewarding experience. I finished! I did it! Mind over matter!

I thought I'd have a buncha poetic stuff to say about finishing, and how I've grown from the experience, but its just too soon I guess. Im really proud of myself and thankful to Dad and Mom Lazenby for gettin me and Grady. Check these AWFUL pics i took on my blackberry during the run haha. As Grady, Sir Lazenby, and I prepare to spend the bulk of the summer traveling around Colombia, I've been doin a lot of research on the country, some of the slang, and the culture. Last Friday we listened to a few Colombian artists we'd never heard of. None of us can even IMAGINE the type of music we are gonna make when we're there. The fact that im actually gonna be in Colombia hasnt actually hit me yet, and I dont think it will til I start packing... or maybe on the airplane... or maybe not even til im there! Lol who knows. However I DO know that this is gonna change our lives dramatically. Ive never been out of the country, not to mention I've never written original music for advertisements, documentaries, films or anything. And I'm doin all of that plus more. So please believe i am on a permanent high on level TEEEEENNNN. I been tryna polish up my Spanish and everything! Ya boi gon be COLD with my Spanish by the time i get back! hahaha

When we were listening to Colombian music on YouTube, we came across a fairly popular rap group from Colombia called ChocQuibTown that all of us really enjoy. They kinda remind me of a Colombian Fugees haha. Hopefully we'll get the chance to work with them. I love their song "Somos Pacifico" and the video is sick. Check it out

If u havent seen it yet, u gotta check it out, its already one of my favs. Old Spice has been KILLIN it with their commercials since the Superbowl in my opinion. SO! Of all the realistic goals I set that people already think are ridiculous, let me go ahead and make an EVEN MORE ridiculous goal. And yup, its this car hahahaha. How long do i have? Well, ASAP. Its already 2010, so I need to be able to spend $400,000 on a car pretty comfortably by 2012. Good thing is that these are made to order and I'll get to specify everything from the interior/exterior to the type of aluminum 10-spoke wheels. Earlier this week, the Nashville Scene's blog, Nashville Cream, posted an article about the GZA performance at MTSU last Wednesday. They gave my band Biscuits and Gravy a pretty dope mention. Check it out:

I watched this movie in my Spanish class Monday and today called Manolita Gafotas (Manolita Four eyes) about a young Spanish kid's family and summer vacation. It was hilarious!!!!!!! Ive only seen one other foreign film in full. All i regret was the fact i had to read the subtitles and couldnt follow the Spanish. One of the main songs in the film stood out to me so I looked it up. Its called "Campanera" and its performed by this Spanish child star Joselita. Am I a Soulja Boy fan?

To be quite frank, Im a fan of anybody successful at what they do. That includes Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, and whatever other rappers people try to give alotta crap to cuz its not "hip hop" lol. Shutup and go back to whistlin they songs, u just mad cuz u hear em so much haha. As far as im concerned, I wouldnt mind being the object of disgust for how outplayed or stupidly catchy my songs are lol. Feel free to disagree, to each his own.

ANYWAY, me and my nigga Wes was watchin a re-airing of the 2009 BET Awards cuz i never saw it and it just happened to be on. Overall it was whack. BET makes everything look like crap hahaha even if its good. (the American Music Awards are only one step above that....) However, the CRUNKEST moment of the whole thing (besides Joe Budden's and Eminem's freestyle), was Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, and Shawty Lo doin "Gucci Bandana", with Shawty Lo especially all Gucci-ed out, from his boots to his umbrella! You say ridiculous? I say DOPENESS! That was the HARDEST moment of the whole program and me and Wes was TOOO hype hahahaha. You cant tell a nigga NOTHING when he come out on stage Gucci-ed out! TOOOO HARD! Like i said, think what u want, but as for me, Im bout to watch this video again!

My FAVORITEST show in the WORLD is Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job. Yup thats the full title... just like A Pimp Named Slickback, A Tribe Called Quest, and All Dogs Go To Heaven 2. LOL

I became familiar with the show just from watching Adult Swim so religiously. I used to catch it at the most random times like Tuesdays at 11 or after midnight. So after more than a year of catching these HILARIOUS 11 min episodes, i decided to buy the first 3 seasons last month. YESSIIIRRR

The show's creators and main characters Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim are masters at "awkward comedy", in which they spoof random moments and scenarios in real life to highlight the absurdity. For example, watch this video of Tim and Eric made along with Zach Galifianakis (from the Hangover) for Absolut Vodka:

Just like most comedy styles, u either like it or u dont. Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job, however, is something you either EXTREMELY LOVE or ABHOR. And in case u dnt know me, im an on a preschool-2nd grade comedy level. I laugh at the STUPIDEST stuff, and i firmly believe this show was created JUST to meet my personal comedy likings. Crap jokes, vomiting, RANDOMNESS and STUPIDITY hahahaha

Im currently writing an 8 page paper on the show for my writing class, and I must say Ive never enjoyed a paper so much. The rough draft is due tomorrow, and Im just starting, but thats not the point.... I just had to shed some light on my FAVORITEST SHOW EVER. I hope to one day work with them or atleast meet em. If u aint watched it, give it a try. If its not ur thing, u must be normal or sumthing.... LAME

We went hard for 9 days straight and it brought a whole new meaning to bein on TEEEEENNNN lol. The beach was dope, the jacuzzis was off the chain, the ppl was hype, and ya boi was the center of attention everywhere i went as always hahahaha. Heres a scenario we all know:

So the party's tonight. Its gonna be poppin. You just know it. And the crew is comin over to your spot before hand for some pre party buffoonery. Drinks are ready, more on the way, and u made the itunes playlist yesterday to get crunk to (aka take shots to lol). Hell, you even made a mix cd for the ride there.

Before you know it, its the next day and u got a mammoth sized headache, and texts conversations with ppl u dont even remember hahaha, but the AWESOMENESS of the night before still lingers in the odor on ur breath and whatever fuzzy memories that ur brain manages to recall.

DOPENESS

To be honest, this weekend was (technically) the first time in 2010 that I indulged in nightlife activities, and me and the fam really lived it up. I've been so wrapped up in the creative and recording process for the new project that I had been COMPLETELY neglecting my social life. I dont really mind at all, I could care less. However, lately Ive just been TOO reclusive.. after all im tryna spread myself thin, not DISAPPEAR! So of course it was non other than Sir Lazenby that got me and Henna out to the club for a change

So shout out to Daysha, Colin, the Woodruff Bros and Lazenby once again for an amazing time Friday night at Varsity Grille. Shout out to DJ Hawaii who convinced me to get on the mic a few times to hype the crowd up haha (#superstatus). And thanks to everybody there that was showing ya boi so much love the entire night. I needed that encouragement. Its an amazing feeling to be embraced like that after not being out for so long. I cant wait for yall to hear my new stuff cuz Ive been workin sooooo hard on it and its soooooo gooood.

In a way, this weekend was one big pre game for spring break. Oh i didnt tell yall? well for the first time EVER (!!!), im doin sumthin for SB.... Ill be goin to Panama City Beach for all the madness that Ive always heard of hahaha. Im too hype, the fams gonna be with me of course, and I already know the whole week we all gon be on teeeennn!!!

i HATE homework. Teachers should ask ME what interests ME, and then test me on that. Ive overslept the past two days. And even though it has been refreshing to get some extra sleep, it wasnt planned and i missed 2 tests and a few important classes so its not as great as it sounds haha.

So here I am attempting to do hw. TV on mute, headphones on full blast bumpin old Maroon 5. I have to do this assignment for English about an old childrens book of my choice and what i learned or something like that. First off, why the hell would I have a childrens book? Second, why would I go thru the trouble of getting one? Definitely NOT worth the effort. I was thinking bout Curious George or Harold and the Purple Crayon, but I cant find either one free online. So now im back to square one.... thinking about doing hw but not actually doing it.

School is the most retarded, stupid, pointless, necessary, maturing, rewarding thing ever. And I say that from a general standpoint. College isnt for everybody, but education, growth, maturity, and experience is. And thats what college is for most people. Unfortunately, this being my 4th (and NOT final) year at Belmont, I just have the worst attitude towards college now. Ive been here forever, and I feel like Ive gained alot from it, but dont necessarily have alot to show for it. And one thing Im NOT afraid to admit, is that Im all about appearances haha. Lets be real. Im waiting for the SECOND i can march into the financial aid and admissions offices here at my university after my first huge success from music just to say NA NA NA BOOO BOOO I PROVED YALL WRONG! I DONT NEED YALL!! I GOT RICH WITHOUT YALL HELP!!! But the truth is any success I have attained thus far is in part due to my university days...

College was my first and is still my primary fan base. And most importantly, college allows me to focus even MORE on music than I would be able to if i dropped out. (Ya boy aint got no major bills yet!) College is my excuse, alibi, and justification for the life i live: late nights, crazy parties, intense studio sessions, u name it. Its oookkk... cuz im in college haha. And I realize that being here buys me time to put in the necessary sacrifices to ensure that i NEVER have to be worried about a job after graduation.

So I write ALL THAT to say, Im in school for a reason... And i think its time i did my hw for the night lol

2 weeks into it

2 weeks into 2010. Spring semester classes have started. The recording and writing process for the next project continues, as well as my on going hibernation period. For those that havent seen me, I have a mini beard now hahaha. It wont get thick like errbody elses haha but this is the thickest its been. I love it tho. I really feel like it matches my mood and my state of mind. Im pretty deep into my creative process and my new and evolved sound. So I just feel the beard compliments it. Sorta like the Kanye Love Lockdown scraggly bear look during the 808s and Heartbreak phase LOL

So i'm still trying to avoid makin appearances in certain places if i can help it. I wouldnt even mind taking all online classes this semester just to cut out having to walk on Belmont's campus and sit in class with everyone else. Shoooot, I wouldnt even mind bein escorted to the studio and back in a limo or a really dark tinted vehicle. I dont wanna see nobody, and I sholl dont want nobody to see me. For example, its Friday, and instead of going out tonight to some highly promoted yet highly questionable party I have nothing to do with and nothing to benefit, Im stayin in and chillin with the people most important to me. Plus, if I really wanna go to a party, Ill just throw a better one with Sir Lazenby, perform at it, AND get paid for it. Ive been learning how to spread myself thin and lay low. That goes for everything from limiting the number of shows I play to even tweeting less.

WHY??

I really dont wanna be distracted. My new songs have only been shared with a very small group of close and trusted friends. And even that proves to be a little too much sometimes.

My work ethic is not quite in overdrive yet, but its quickly getting there. Ill give it another 2 weeks before I start spending nights in the studio.

Currently tho, I'm happier than Ive ever been. My focus is top notch right now and its allowed me to further perfect every aspect of my songwriting, flow, lyricism, and production. Im so excited about this project and its gonna blow alotta ppl away.

Oh and the LA trip? Ive gotten alotta questions about it. But really, theres nothing I have to say to yall about it. It was crazy, and Ive been on a high from it ever since. It was just a taste of the life I work for, and that was all I needed to successfully motivate me to finish this project by the deadline we have set.

As always I feel truly blessed and favored by God, and Im thankful for the growing talent and potential he's given me. With that being said, I'm bout to blow...

There is so much going thru my mind.... well actually theres been alotta goin thru my mind this entire holiday season. The next 6 months for me will be the moment of truth concerning my music career. Why? I mean theres no way to really explain it, it just is. I know it.... i feel it. And the one thing that has never failed me is my gut feeling.

So, the past few weeks since school let out for the semester, I've just been, what i call, hibernating. I dont mean Ive been sleeping in a bunch or being lazy, but i really just been in this whole "perfect my craft" mood. (Ideally I wuld have flown to another country and told everybody not to call me haha but its the holidays) So Ive been writing my butt off. Ive been exercising my butt off. Lol. Why? Cuz i have to be ready. Every single aspect of my artistry and image has to get where it needs to be really soon. So, i really aint wanted to see nobody unless it deals with music, and I aint been in the mood to be out really

So when my girlfriend and I went downtown Nashville last night to bring in the New Year with all the other TEN FREAKIN THOUSAND PEOPLE, i cheered, i yelled (the fireworks were dope lol). But in my gut I felt anxious, nervous, and excited all at the same time, cuz 2010 is really here. And this year has more significance than I realize yet. I dont know... things like this are hard to blog. Hell, my life is hard to blog, but I have to say this

How did I come to this conclusion about 2010? For once everything in my life is where it needs to be (or pretty darn close). Like the people around me... Robb 'Sir' Lazenby (and Dad Lazenby haha), Grady Woodruff, Henna Jurca, and my publicist Miji are all on the same goal path with me. I finally have that ultimate network of support that encourages, motivates, and challenges me. My TEAM. My own PARENTS are now SET on the fact that this is what Im meant to do. Back in high school my mom wasn't even cool with me goin to a music college lol

In addition to that, theres SO much else goin on. I dont feel like wasting time to explain, because I really just want to DELIVER on it. Like I said this is my hibernation period. Yall just gon have to wait... cuz my plans HAVE to be executed perfectly from here on out.

Thanks to everybody for ur help, support, hate, criticism, tweets, messages, money, etc etc. I just think its funny how I always keep forgetting that God has been guiding my life since before I was born and has been blessing along the way. But lucky for Him he knows whats next lol. Im still waiting. But the good thing is that its sooooo close.

So yea. 2010. I didnt wanna do sum cheesy resolution blog post, because this year is so much more

Japanese Lunchbox

My boy Chance Warhol from the NOBOTS released the artwork for his album Japanese Lunchbox: A Love Story today comin out Feb. 13th, 2010.

Its DOPE! I told him this picture really speaks 1000 words! He let me preview some of the album and its CRAZY. Its definitely something new and progressive not even just for Nashville, but all music. Im glad he let me feature on it and be apart of it! Our track together is sick. Im lookin forward to the release tho, and on 2/12/2010 Ill be right in the front gettin hype and showin my support!

Young Money album: Hit or Miss?

I cant lie... I'm a huge Cash Money, Young Money fan. Not as huge as my homie Elizabeth McClanahan hahaha (ON BLAST), but still, a fan nonetheless. Weezy still reigns the games hottest rapper, and Drake isn't far behind. So all Birdman has to do is flaunt his roster and he's good. LOL

ANYWAY, the Young Money album dropped today and I've been looking forward to it just to see how it would be. Albums with full "crews" or complete label rosters are always interesting haha. I always think of Diddy's Da Band and that compilation album by The Inc (Murder Inc used to be that crew! Irv, Ja, Ashanti, Charlie Baltimore, Vita!). So after listenin to the album I felt that it was blog worthy (well, really its Christmas break and Im bored). Here are my thoughts about the album:

Structure wise, Lil Wayne is auto tuning on pretty much every hook. Its not really a good or bad thing anymore. Its just accepted. A new song with Wayne? He'll probably have auto tune on his voice lol.

Mack Maine in my opinion OWNED the album. I wasnt expectin him to go harder than anybody. I can say that Mack's verse on "Got Money" on 'Tha Carter III' made me lose alotta faith in him LOL. "Whooooosh" For real my nigga?? Anyway he definitely shined on his verses startin with the first song "Gooder". "Stuntin on dem hoes it aint me its the money fault/ still make it rain get struck by a money bolt"

I noticed there was shortage of Drake and Nicki Minaj on the album. But thats understandable I guess since they are the two most popular members. I mean Drake has murdered songs with Kanye, Timbaland, Eminem, the list goes on. And Minaj is comin up fast in the game, having already collabed with Yo Gotti, Gucci, and Robin Thicke. So needless to say i would have enjoyed more Minaj and Drizzy. But then again, I dont think Im alone on that....

Theres a singer Chanel thats signed to Young Money that i SWEAR i never heard of. She was uuuum... random. The only singer. I think they could have taken points from Da Band on this one and incorporated her more like Da Band incorporated Sarah. How bout puttin Chanel on a few more hooks and takin Wayne off a few??? Actually... on second thought, nah. I dont like her voice much anyway. She just a singer. Nothing special to be honest. Plus she was only on 2 songs. Definitely RANDOM

The kid Lil Chuckee?? He sound older than Wayne LOL

15 year old rapper Lil Twist?? DOPE!!! Since he young and already spittin heat, he has more potential than a few of the other members of Young Money. I been a fan of his since that song "The Leak" he did with big brother Weezy. FIRE. And he only had TWO verses on the album. The song "Girl I Got You" was cool but then Lil Chuckee killed it for me haha

Oh and random sidenote just for the record. The rapper Tyga be spittin FIRE, but i just dont necessarily like him! Idk y i just dont. And Jae Millz???!?! That nigga needs to disappear. I remember bumpin his song "No, No, No" back in 10TH GRADE and he still aint made it.

The best song hands down is still "Every Girl". I dont even think Wayne himself could outdo that song this year. It just would been better for the Young Money crew if they hadn't waited so long to drop the album after that song came out.

Overall, on a scale from WACK to DOPE, I rate it DECENT. Lol bout 7 out of 10 stars. I gotta give props to Lil Wayne for making Young Money the hottest crew in rap. But thats really thanks to him, Wayne, and Minaj. And like I was saying earlier, the Young Money album is primarily everybody else BUT them.... sooooo u get what im tryna say??? Lol

If there was one local hip-hop artist who dominated our iPod this year it would have to be Future—the megabytes of The Overnight Mixtape series were mega-tight. Releasing six mixtapes in as many weeks is no small feat, and maintaining the high level of quality is nothing short of miraculous—and we're reminded of this every time we hit "shuffle" and a Future-fied take on the day's top hits pops up every other track. Charles Hamilton... 2 thumbs down

Ok. So, this time last year, I'm not gonna lie, I was on rapper Charles Hamilton's nuts a lil too hard. I first heard about him after he was literally on every single hip hop blog site that I frequent. On top of that, he was one of the XXL magazines freshman class of 2009, along with Wale, Kid Cudi, B.O.B., Asher Roth, Cory Gunz, Ace Hood (?? thats wut i said), and a bunch other people (but no Drake...). Mind you now, this was before Wale was as big as he is now, Kid Cudi's "Day-N-Nite" wasn't a huge single yet, and Asher Roth was probably the most popular at the time with "I Love College" BOOOOOOO.

ANYWAY i got curious one day started lookin into Charles Hamilton more and was immedaitely intrigued by his SONIC THE HEDGEHOG OBSESSION! First off, JERK! Because i SWEAR to yall I was trying to make an entire mixtape using music from the Sonic videogames, only to find out that Hamilton had an entire 7 mixtape series with a Sonic theme. So, after hatin on him for a few hrs and bein pissed at myself for waiting so long, I downloaded all of his mixtapes.

My reaction? DOPENESS. I kinda overexagerrated a lil when i told OPENMIC that he was already one of my favorite emcees ALREADY, but the fact is I was impressed, I was a fan, and I usually dont care too much for new artists. Im at the point now where I dont listen to any artist that I cant learn from creatively, musically, and lyrically. I am in need of constant inspiration because I write and record so much. So to me, Charles Hamilton was the new crack. Not all of his songs were just OFF THA CHAIN to me, but out of 7 mixtapes, I was bound to find 20 or so BANGERS. Not to mention, the nigga was doin quite well even with airplay and video play for an up and commer. His song "Brooklyn Girls" was a really clever song that I thoroughly enjoyed and I was too hype when I saw it on the BET's 106 & Park countdown (as if I knew the nigga or sumthin lol)

But thats the thing, i thought that I kinda understood and related with Charles Hamilton. Dude was weeeiiirrrdd. I mean he is weird, with his obession for the color pink, Sonic The Hedgehog, and lava lamps. But at the end of the day, you culdnt deny his hustle. He was making moves, staying relevant, and had the songs to prove it. I read an article stating that he often slept in the studio, woke up and recorded, and did this regularly. He produced and sung a little as well, and yall know thats just like me all day. So I definitely was reppin that nigga hard as the NEXT UP.

Well.... time passed and that nigga just got ... well... LAME. And anybody that knows me, knows my kryptonite is lame people. That nigga got punched by a girl, admitted in an article that he doesn't shower alot, and even LOST a beef to Soulja Boy (who happens to be his labelmate). None of that is a good look. I've never typically been the person to let scandal ruin the music for me (Kanye is my favorite artist no matter what he does), however Charles Hamilton just fell off TOO hard. And that aint even cool. His weirdness worked for him at first, but for u to pull off bein weird, u still gotta be hella cool at everything else.... And he lost his cool factor, which only left the WEIRD

Complex Magazine did an article on Charles Hamilton's top career fails and its a quite insightful and honest article. Anybody familiar with Charles Hamilton will read it and say... "Dang... thats so truee... He effed up..." LOL

So fast forward to the present day, a year after bein introduced to Charles Hamilton. Wale just dropped a DOPE album. Kid Cudi is undoubtedly at the top of XXL's freshman class, and Drake, who wasnt even mentioned as a freshman, has one of the most anticipated albums in rap now. But Charles Hamilton??? not one of that niggaz songs is on my iPod lol. #imjustsayintho...

Chip Tha Ripper

My boy OPENMIC and I were tweetin at like 4 am last night and I saw him talkin bout copping Chip Tha Rippers new mixtape just becuz of how fresh the concept and artwork was. I only heard one of Chip's songs, "T.G.I.F." on one of Cudi's mixtapes, but I was already a fan just after that verse. Then he told me to look at his blog to see it so i did and he was right. I had to IMMEDIATELY download it just cuz the cover art and concept was so sick!!!

DOPE, RIGHT?! Good lookin on this one Mike. So i downloaded it like 5 am while I was typin this paper for my marketing class and started listenin to it. At 1st, I admit I was like... I dont know... Sumthi bout his voice threw me off. Lol its like a real chill flow with Kid Cudi and Kanye Influence. And when I let my boy Sir Lazenby hear one of the tracks he said it was a Devin The Dude feel to it as well. Nonetheless.... its sick. Another reason why Im ALWAYS steppin my game up.

The tape was released on the 1st, but theres a release party in Chicago tomorrow with Chuck Inglish and a few other ppl. Dang.... I wuld flew down for that. Real talk. I got a lil saved up lol. I can splurge a lil. But i got a full weekend. haha (im bein serious tho... it aint nuthin for a nigga to get a roundtrip to and from Midway, ya feeeel me!?)

Future the Unknown
It's hard to talk about Nashville's new school without mentioning Future the Unknown. Best known as the frontman for local live-rap troupe The Biscuits N Gravy Band and for the two mixtapes of clean-cut, positive hip-hop he released in 2006-7, Future came into his own as an artist this year. Starting with The Sci Fly EP—six songs of electro-influenced, club-banging rap that isn't afraid to indulge his affections—and then followed by six (count 'em, six!) volumes of the Overnight Mixtape series—a mammoth undertaking that finds Future running roughshod through the late summer's Top 40 and freestylin' like no fool had ever touched them tracks—this was the year the Unknown conquered Music City. Future also gets a big huzzah for introducing us to the super fresh skills of Open Mic, the city's best hype man and a talented artist in his own right. As of press time we hadn't heard about any plans for the twenty-ten, but if this dynamic duo keeps on track we can probably expect 8 bajillion units of dope material in the coming months.

The American Music Awards sucked. But they always do. Me and Sir Lazenby watched it last night. It was God awful... Janet Jackson looked old to me for the first time ever. Everybody felt sorry for Whitney Houston. And J. Lo fell... LOL actually that was a highlight. But still. It sucked. I can already tell there will be several occasions that I wont be present to receive my American Music Awards.... maybe the first year or two.

In the meantime, im finna watch J. Lo fall again HAHAHA

Just read a dope article about the Jay-Z concert on Nashville Cream (the Nashville Scene blog). Alotta yall know I went to the Jay concert at Vandy last Friday. Why would I not? Its Jay! In my opinion, anybody that calls themselves a rapper and didnt come up under Jay is just super irrelevant. But anyway, alotta yall might not know that I rode in a freakin stretch Escalade limo, courtesy of Sir Lazenby. DOPENESS. We rolled like Diddy on Friday night. Champagne and all. Got alotta evil looks, got alotta good looks hahaha. Either way, I wasnt about to blog and account the entire night. Some things are just TOO great to blog about. You know them events that u hope u got a few pics of atleast, but other than that u just refer to that memory in reflection or with the ones u shared it with.

SO, with that being said, this article on Nashville Cream is dope. And it pretty much sums up my experience seeing Jay. Im just happy that SOMEONE was able to put it to words, because I know I couldnt. If you are a Jay fan and havent seen him live, that sucks hahahaha. I used to be one of you... until Friday, that is lol

All you artists that claim to be doing something need to take notes. My girl Miss B is next up.

I met Miss B in August 2008 at freshman orientation here at Belmont and we hit it off. I featured her on a few shows and a track or two but she was still adjusting being virtually unknown here in Nashville after working to make a name for herself in D.C.

Despite all this tho, I gave my girl HER SPACE lol cuz i know adjusting can be hard, so the second we started school this August, we got to work. We met up and made plans for her to not only enter the Urban/Pop Showcase competition on campus, but to WIN IT and use it to her advantage. "Dont just be in the showcase... BE THE SHOWCASE".

Time passed, yall know I was on my hustle with The Overnight Mixtape Series, and me and Lazenby was throwin parties, and expanding our brand. We featured B on two of the mixtapes and me and Lazenby were both amazed at how B sounded sooooo much hungrier and aggressive than we remembered previously. But even then were still too busy to work hand in hand with her on the showcase, So Miss B really took our talk to heart and started making moves of her own, putting her band together, makin necessary plans to enter the Showcase. She reached out to me a week or so before the showcase and asked me to sample a Shirley Temple song called "Oh My Goodness" that she heard in one of her music business courses. The professor Don Cusic made a joke about somebody sampling it for the Urban Showcase, and sure enough Miss B realized that could be a possibility. So I got to work on chopping the sample and my boy CJ Pettaway hooked up the drums on the track. We all knew we had something special

The rest is history, Miss B passed both rounds of preliminaries, made it into the show, and OWNED IT. But unlike all these other showcase hopefuls, you havent seen the last of B. We are currently in the works of something huge. Thats all Ima say

And get this understood, Im talking bout the REAL Miss B... not this fake chick that SUCKS. Alotta youtube hits and crap dont mean nothing about ur skill level. I dont even care if u got a deal, label backing, or beats by Nitti. Im just bein real....

Bandbox is the Future

Heres some info about a website that I've recently learned about: Bandbox.com

Bandbox is a great website for artists, musicians, songwriters, etc because it allows you to keep up to 100% of what you sell. This is an AMAZING alternative to artists like me that really wouldnt be gaining much by paying to be on iTunes, then only make 30% of what I sell. Bandbox does offer premium services, like selling hard copies of albums through their site. And they do take a percentage of those sales. However we all know that majority of the music being bought nowdays is digital, so this company is ahead of the curve. It definitely has the artist's best interest in mind.

I had the pleasure of working with Brian Peterson who is one of the founders of Bandbox. David Venus from Belmont University referred me to him for a project that they were putting together for the Urban/Pop Showcase this year here on campus. They asked to tape me interviewing students around campus with some random questions to throw people off guard, all while tryna sqeeze Bandbox in haha. It was like Jay Leno's "Jay walking" segment when he walks up to random people on the street and asks them questions out of the blue.

Overall the videos turned out great! They were pretty hilarious and it showed me a side of myself I never really knew about lol. According to Brian, I might even have a future with hosting things. Oh snap! Future is the next... Wayne Brady LOLOL.

For real tho, yall check out Bandbox. They are growing and have already enlisted big names artists such as Jewel and Taylor Swift. Go head and sign up, its free. Just upload ur music, put the player on ur myspace, blog, whatever, and start countin your money haha. Hopefully I'll be working with the people at Bandbox alot more w/in the near future... Ok, now for Overnight Mixtape, Vol. 6... after last weeks disappointment, IM SO EXCITED CUZ WE ARE BACK! Ive been writing my butt off in preparation for the HUGEST MIXTAPE COMEBACK IN RAP HISTORY! FINALLY, yall know I always got drama at school... I always got drama either with my professors or the Admissions, Financial Aid folk, whatever... Well, the most recent drama is some lady, who shall not be named, tellin me how to spend my free time! I know Im graduating, I know I will get my degree... eventually. Im not concerned about that. But my PRIORITY is making sure I grind hard enuff while im here to ensure that the second I walk across that stage, I will already be walking into the world a financially stable man in my career. Im finna be huge. Famous. Large. Everything. Im not there yet. So I have work to do. And ill be DARNED (lol) if ANYBODY tell me I need to focus more on my studies to make better grades...

TRICK, last time I checked yall took me off scholarship and replaced it with loans, so please lemme do me. Straight up, she told me I need to spend less time on the music cuz its not so important now. Woman please. This IS my life. School is easy. School is nothing. Then she said "Im an academic role model. people pay attention to the grades I make." ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?! i have NEVER got off stage after performing and had a fan ask me what is my GPA.... RETARD. I aint never cared what anybody thought of me. Sometimes I might take it personal for a few seconds, maybe a full minute. Sometimes an hr if it stings. But after that whatever haha. So why in the hell wuld I care what a nigga gotta say about my GPA???

She called me to her office and tried to chew me out over some grades. Biggest waste of my time. Lemme get this straight, the school has taken me off scholarship, then she wanna take it upon herself to follow my academic progress??? For what? I dont hear u tryna offer me any money. However publishing companies are. Sooooo... Music wins. THIS IS MY LIFE.

She suggested I drop a class I wasnt doin to well in. Thats cool. But THEN she tried to SUGGEST what I should do with my free time after I drop the class...

"...and then have the extra time to focus on your other classes (notice I did not say to use the extra time to focus on music)"

HECK NAW! I AM A GROWN MAN! WHAT GAVE U THE RIGHT TO EVEN....

I replied with some professional yet straightforward email

"Well I appreciate the help, but I think I have the situation figured out now after talking with [my teacher] over the past few days and again today in depth. And as far as free time, I believe there is never a better idea than to devote more time to my passion and career."

Look, I hope she reads this. I hope she calls me back in her office to "talk".

I just think my university drama is funny cuz they gon be askin me for money and donations and to come speak and perform for the students when I make it big. Watch. And what Ima do? Throw em a few million and show em what my below average grade point average did for me.

We regret to inform you that there will be not be a release of The Overnight Mixtape Vol, 6. The art of crafting a mixtape within a twenty four hour time frame is always an overwhelming challenge and most of the time we feel that we live up to the task....however this week we feel that we did not deliver at all. In order to preserve the tradition of releasing epic/quality mixtapes, we refuse to release a mixtape with such poor energy and relevance. By saying this, we are only going to release one track off of this week's recording session. We apologize, but please understand this was a wake up call to the WHOLE family. Please stay tuned in for next week's release of The Overnight Mixtape Vol, 6, as we promise that it will deliver nothing but perfection. 5 Weeks Straight

The Overnight Mixtape Series has become more a movement now than anything. I look forward to it every Thursday night, headin over to Sir Lazenby's apartment, Grady firing up Pro Tools, and us goin at it for literally the ENTIRE night and all of Friday. Usually we dont even get adequate rest until Saturday or Sunday night because... well... ITS THE WEEKEND. And we're NEVER too tired to pass on good weekend plans haha. I dont care how many mixtapes we do...

ANYWAY, Here it is. Vol. 5

I would say no introduction is necessary, but actually it is. Because Vol. 5 marks a new higher standard we have raised our music to. This mixtape is dedicated to DJ Screw and I must say I think we did him proud.

The genius of the Vol. 5 tho is the amount that we experimented on my sound and just with track selection. We tried alotta new stuff and as usual, it turned out dope. I always find out something new about myself every mixtape, whether it be a style of flow I didnt know I had or just sometine HUUUGE like.... ok look.... I thought i told ya that we wont stop, i thought i told ya that we wont stop....

VOLUME 4 IS HERE PEOPLE! THE OVERNIGHT MIXTAPE VOL. 4 IS HERE! WE DID IT! A FULL MONTH! A MIXTAPE EVERY WEEK! NO ONE GRINDS AS HARD AS WE DO! POP BOTTLES!!!!

The Overnight Mixtape, Vol. 4 is a milestone for us because we were able to get some freakin legit drops from GLC of Good Music and The King of the Trill, Bun B. That really set the tone of the tape. Me, Sir Lazenby, and Grady keep finding ways to step it up. And this week we have raised the bar once again. The recording process was shorter than ever, however the mixing took longer than expected because we all got a lil toooo cocky and took naps after we finished recording vocals at 6 am haha. I actually went to work and class, but Grady and Lazenby overslept. So the tape is still bein released late in the afternoon as usual.

Guest features this week are legendary. Simple. Straight to the point. Yet legendary. 615 reppers to the fullest. Of course the hometown hero OPENMIC, and FINALLY the only other rappers besides Mike in Nashville that I mess with, The N.O.B.O.T.S. YEA! Chance and Ducko came by the infamous Lazenby Lab and did what they do best. Well, we all did what we do best. Special shout out to Evan P. Donohue who came thru to grace the mixtape with stories about his lego building childhood lol

Overall, this is EASILY the best Overnight Mixtape yet. Vol 4 is the new classic. And i do not say that lightly. Spread the word. Actually I dont care what you do. We've already made it

I'm FINALLY 21. To some of yall, I'm younger than u thought. To others I'm gettin old. Lol but the reality of it all is that I dont really have time to focus on it. I'm not where I want to be in life yet. Im only beginning to get there. So while yall go out out for your birthdays and celebrate and drink, go crazy, whatever... I, on the other hand, am about to hit the studio. Vol. 3 of the Overnight Mixtape coming tomorrow. I had a meeting at a publishing company again today. I talked to this lady Elaine from the Lexus dealership again about a few cars I might be interested in. I'm still in grind mode. And i stop for nothing. Not even the overhyped, overrated, 21st bday lol. So no cake or party just yet. Im thinkin much bigger than that. I want my life to be a non stop party. And I am more than willing to sacrifice a liquor run tonight for it.

I never quite gave yall my official opinion of The Blueprint 3.... Well, its classic. Hands down. Only song I cant stand to listen to is the Kid Cudi joint. Mad boring. But besides that, Jay did it again. And it different, its fresh, its current, and relevant. Jay is a beast at that. Stayin relevant. Not to mention, the whole live concert on Fuse last Friday on Sept 11th was a GENIUS idea. Ppl were already singin the words to the album, and all the guests on the album made appearances just like in Fade To Black.

So with that being said, I have already set my money aside to buy the best freakin tickets available the MOMENT they go on sale. Hov is def in my top 5. But yes i know, he's in your top 5 too. Thats why Jay-Z is what he is. He is not only vital to Hip Hop but all popular music and culture. Jay is and has been the official spokesperson for Hip Hop to the world. What is Hip Hop? Look at Jay. And you know thats the truth. I'm sure everybody goes thru periods where Hov gets dropped from their top spot, but he always does somethin to reassume his position.

I FINALLY have the opportunity to see him live. Dream come true. Well... actually, dream is the collab. But this shall do.... for now anyway lol

In other news, I am walkin thru life with a permanent high. I feel like a pot head, except I have a never ending supply of this... this life, my life, this inspiration, the emotion i feel. Everything is coming together, my dreams, some things unexpected, but most things are happening just like I prayed for and just like I envisioned. Sir Lazenby has done a great job at really helping me mentally PICTURE myself in the life I want, but the fact that stuff is happening like it is makes it so much easier. And the best part about all of this, is that its STILL the BEGINNING. I have so much to look forward to...

I know im being really general, but it'll all make sense soon enough. But in the meantime, feel free to question the air of super stardom that follows me haha. More people are finally starting to take notice and catch wind of the vision... and while most would say BOUT TIME, i know its PERFECT TIME. Because its all MEANT to happen just like this. Dang, I can't wait til I write my autobiography...

Just got thru watchin the movie Hook for the second time in 2 days.... and if you don't know yet... that is my absolute FAVORITE movie. The Star Wars and Matrix Trilogies trail closely behind. But I must say, nothing is more inspiring than a routine viewing of Hook LOL. Seriously. Just watch it and tell me you dont INSTANTLY feel like you can fly (????) EXACTLY.

Hahaha in recent news, I went to a dealership today with Sir Lazenby to check out and test drive some Lexus cars. Yeeessssiiiirrr. All you haters must soon bow down, if not already. Project: GET A LEXUS is well underway lol. Plus in the words of my nigga Wes, a Lexus would be the ULTIMATE self bday gift!

I met up with some respected artists friends of mine today who are on the come up as well just to talk business, goals, life, everything. And its definitely SO CRUCIAL to surround yourself with people that CHALLENGE you, INSPIRE you, and MOTIVATE you. That is what my team does for me (shout out to Sir Lazenby, Biscuits and Gravy, and Openmic), and that is what I hope I can do for them. As long as i surround myself with hungry people, I'll never lose my appetite for more. Quote of the day, niggaz....

ANYWAY, im startin to get back into my regular blogging routine now. The school year is taking off well so far. Im doin homework as i type (sorta). I'm also gettin together concepts for the next Overnight Mixtape. Can't wait. The response for the last one was CRAZY! And i know its only gonna get bigger

Its been a long time...

I have not posted a blog in a very long time. Oh how I miss thee

First off, my stage performances are getting better. Still not a whole lotta new recorded material, but soon enough. The month of August was jam packed with shows and there are more to come. But I must say this month had so many highlights.

I'm back at Belmont, thankfully. Mom and Dad I love you, but I hated being at home this summer lol. And to my beloved Kroger, I hate your guts. However I love your savings, discounted groceries, and thanks for still giving me the extra 10% associate discount even tho I'm no longer employed there.

My personal goal is to never work another job again after Kroger and so far I'm on the right track. All i need now is a CONSTANT flow of money to replace crappy employment FOREVER. I'm so sincere about this. I went car hunting with my refund check money. And as I said before, I'm not settling for anything less than a Lexus. Preferably an ES 300 or 330. So please stop tryna convince me to settle for a Honda. I'm stubborn. Ignorantly and stupidly so sometimes, however I'm serious nonetheless. And I'm a product of the game for the last freakin time. I cant help the fact I spend unnecessary amounts of money on shoes and soon to be a Luxury car I can barely afford lol. It looks good and I want it.

With that being said, I've been having quite a bit of of fun talkin a big game this month. I must admit, being cocky is even more fun than I anticipated hahaha. The party I threw last Friday... OMG i talked that party up soooo huge.... and look what happened. 600+ ppl, only bout 4 days of planning (shout out to Sir Lazenby), and pretty much the best freakin party anybody had ever been to. Everyone that doubted me is now on a scrotum diet haha. I do need to check myself at times, because recently I have not been able to simply put up this conceited front when I tweet or talk to people, and I assume this entire hella cocky personality in which I actually feel like I'm the best thing that ever happened to music, entertainment, women, everything. And i think its starting to show lol. But the strange thing about it, is that I keep on backing it up. I'm fueling my inner ego. LOL. And this is coming from the former self-acclaimed "Humble Man of The Year".

Anyway, I'm happier than ever. I admit, my spirituality is slipping a lil. No church in a while, and have been having a harder time finding moments to pray. If there is one thing about me, no one ever needs to tell me what i need to improve on or tell me about myself. I analyze myself as well as others quite effectively and accurately. And i will be the first person to put myself in check.

So, in closing, thanks to everyone that has journeyed with me thus far. Soon I'll be too famous to even return your tweets, facebook comments, and myspace messages LOL jk (sorta) but anyway, I do appreciate every single compliment I have ever gotten or every time someone walks up to me on campus just to tell me how amazing they think my music is. Because all of that is confirmation that I am headed in the right direction with this talent God birthed in me. I'll never lose sight of where my gift comes from and that ultimately my goal is to bring him glory. Yall just have to learn to not take it so personal when I start ranting about my how I deserve to be recognized as the hottest entertainer on the face of the Earth. I can't help it sometimes lol

Got on Twitter today and realized rapper Fabolous' album Loso's Way came out today. So i got on Imeem and checked out the whole thing while tweeting my thoughts Track by track. so instead of writing some hella professional review, READ MY TWEETS, NIGGA!

2nd track is ok. idk how i feel about Fabolous with all these singing hooks. his voice is grittier too. got a clipse vibe like Malice sorta

song about his father. however, its another Loso attempt at his soul vibe. i just cant get with it.

Last song "I Miss My Love" story selling soulful track. This album is not very cohesive. The last few tracks wer soulful on the NY city tip

Then before the soulful tracks there were 2 sex songs

Then before that it was all his singy r&b/pop rap tracks with overly dont production. I dont get it Loso. i dont get it

Thru with the album. Top 3 tracks "Makin Love", "Last Time", and "The Fabolous Life"

Overall.... 4 out of 10. Im out.

I dont even know where to start....

There are so many things going through my mind... so much to say...

First off, Im just getting back home from Club Limelight downtown Nashville at the Mashville show. Dope show, I killed my 2 songs haha. All the DJ's were ON POINT. And I am declaring for all to read.... DJ Wick-It is the sickest DJ of all time. Dude just has IT

ANYWAY....

I'm having a mid-year crisis... lol but seriously. Check out my situation

With all that being said, life just doesnt feel at its best right now. And honestly I dont know why. Besides my crappy job, Ive been performing more than ever, have a fairly steady flow of income (to my surprise), traveled to Chicago and even visited New York for the first time, and I have FINALLY begun getting the recognition and respect I have been working for in the city, from local publications and well connected people to DJ's and fellow artists. Not too bad huh??

Its funny what an AMAZING EP can do for an artist...

The thing is tho, my inspiration is GONE. (Sorry Mr. West, its Gone!)

Ive always gone through periods of dry spells and writers block when it comes to music. But it has just never been this BAD. And i have desperately been trying to figure out WWWHHHHYYYY!!!!

I sit in front of my computer, bumping instrumentals, cant think of hooks. Stay up late nights tryna beat my most highly acclaimed song to date... "Product Of The Game". Heck I'm tryna beat out the whole entire EP. But I just cant right now. And i refuse to force songs. I have done a few new songs this summer that are decent, killed a few features for other peoples records... but none of my own that I would put on an album. Maybe a free song or a song I will later rewrite and release. But nothing that I am crazy over.

One thing I can say for sure that may be contributing to my lack of creative inspiration, is the fact that I feel so pressured. I hate to say it, but even though the response to my EP wasnt as GRANDIOSE and MAGNIFICENT as I had hoped, I still have made an incredible amount of buzz with it. Its lasted longer than I thought it would, people are still downloading it consistently, I have even begun to sell hard copies at shows, and the best thing about it is that I constantly meet ppl that I have absolutely no ties to that come across my music in places as far as San Diego, Oklahoma, Texas, the list goes on. So I am very pleased.

But I refuse to rush whats next.

I have concepts, tracks in the works, almost completed instrumentals, half hooks, unfinished rough mixes, etc etc. But nothing promising really. And why? I literally just feel empty.

Now dont get me wrong, I can make a MILLION tracks right now, that are good. I can make a million hot tracks right now with a catchy hook and dope verses with a SICK beat that I make myself. But it wont adequately express my growth as an artist. And if theres one thing i stress in my music, its growth. Im stuck somewhere in between The Sci Fly EP and nowhere. A black hole.

I dont think people really understand how much I put into that little 5 track CD (6 with the intro). It was the hardest Ive ever worked on ANYTHING in my life. Literally. No exaggeration. From the conceptual process, to the writing, production, and recording.... THAT WAS ALL ME---- except for the engineer. THEN you have to take into account the artwork i asked to get done, release party, listening party, promotion and fliers. ME ME ME. I will give credit to those few select people that busted their butt to really help out, but honestly all the people that I just KNEW would lend a helping hand, had nothing to do with the EP until I handed them or sent them a link of the finished copy.

And since then, I HAVE BEEN DRAINED.

I PUT MY HEART AND SOUL INTO EVERY ONE OF THOSE BEATS, LYRICS, TITLES, ETC ETC ETC. THE SCI FLY EP IS THE MOST ADEQUATE REPRESENTATION TO DATE OF FUTURE AS AN ARTIST, MAN, AND CREATIVE GENIUS.

Now its just time to give the world more. This next project is gonna be sooooo Crazy. I just dont know where to start. I feel like Kanye after he released 'College Dropout' when he said he wasnt gonna come out with another album if he couldnt beat his last. I am currently trying to figure out what I need to do to get back to that place of ULTIMATE INSPIRATION AND CREATIVITY like I had this time last year. Like I had last semester. What do I need to do? Take another trip outta town? Pray more? Get back in the gym? Smoke weed? Snort cocaine? WHAATTT!!??!?!?

All I know is, I feel like I am slowly dying inside. I have lost the ability to produce my emotions in a song with ease like I used to. I need my inspiration filled to the brim once again. I am not worried that it will not come. I am just impatient. I need it by yesterday lol. Its affecting my mood constantly.

Anyway, I am half asleep, and I dont know what Im talking about anymore. And the last thing Im about to do is proof read this blog, so if it doesnt make sense get over it.

Back from NY, still on a natural high from the city itslef... and already BIG THINGS are POPPIN!! Lol I got a phone call from my homie Tyzayah the SECOND i touchdown in Nashville and he tells me about an article in the Nashville Scene about the show im performing at on Friday. Its 4 am, and Im wide awake in "the city that never sleeps" enjoying every minute... literally every single minute.... of my first time being in New York city. Im not in the right mood to blog. Im not in the right mindset to adequately put my thoughts and emotions into words yet. Im still soaking the city in. My hotel is right in the middle of Time Square. I couldn't have dreamt of a better trip. I went to Harlem today. Tomorrow the subway rides and borough trips continue. But trust me when I say, this is beginning of a very long term, serious relationship....

I work at ****** and I hate it.

Good question.

I no longer have a life. I get paid minimum wage (almost).

But the worst of all...

I am no longer inspired.

I cant write lyrics, make beats, I cant even record as much anymore.

I hope everybody at my job reads this, and I get fired out of "sympathy" lol.

In all honesty, this is a humbling experience. I worked on a holiday for the first time in my life this weekend. This was the only 4th of July in my life that I didnt have anything close to grilled food or barbecue. I know God has me here for a reason. I know that this will make me so much more grateful for all of His blessings when I finally start making more money with this talent of music that was imparted in me. This is only temporary. So excuse my complaining. I just need to vent for the time being. I don't even need to wonder if anybody can relate because I know every underground artists or college going career-pursuer endures the same type situation. Whether it be a Nursing major/part-time waitress or a grocery bagging rapper named Future, this is nothing new. So I remain thankful because its only a matter of time before I'm laughing about all of this on Oprah hahaha (shout out to my nigga Stedman!)

So... in the meantime, Goodnight. Another 8 and a half hr shift tomorrow. But thankfully I fly to NY on Tuesday!! So, I do get a break soon.

Its always exciting to see a member of your crew really hold their own. I introduce to you, Openmic.

Openmic has been my partner in crime when it comes to music since trading church freestyles back when I was like 13 haha. Together we are Clean Cut (dont ask me what it is exactly, i really dont know myself yet lol), but over the years it has become our common "mission statement"... that not only sets us apart and defines us as artists, but continually stretches our potential and keeps us musically focused and driven. Its been amazing to me to really see how me and Mike have grown so far apart if u listen to our music, but still remain eerily in the same mindset with our drive and passion. We have that Big Boi/Andre 3000 complex. I cant BEGIN to tell you how different we are musically... but still it works.

We have both come such a long way, and are both FINALLY beginning to tap into our own styles, images, and personas. Me as the waaaaay left, "out-there", techno rappin, melody singin, pop music makin artist; with Openmic as the hip hop guru, graffiti, dope lyricism, full-blood emcee.

Openmic's latest project is a mixtape entitled Fresh: The Lost Tapes, which is a compliation of unreleased tracks dating back to last year that he is finally making available to the public. Its a free download... u cant beat that. And anybody that knows Mike, knows that every track he does beats the one he just did cuz he progresses just THAT much. So this is a MUST have for not only Hip Hop fans but all those that appreciate passionate music. The passion is in the lyrics, his growth, and his freakin trailer for the mixtape haha. HOW COME I CANT HAVE A MIXTAPE TRAILER!!?!?!? lol check it out

No need in me filling you in on the events that happened yesterday. The King of Pop died. Michael Jackson. I just want to give my two cents on the whole situation. Id be stupid to not add that Michael Jackson has had a HUGE role in shaping pop music, pop culture, dance music, etc etc etc. He was an international superstar, he surpassed 3 entire generations on top, and he was a legend before he died. Hell, even all the people around him or associated with him became legendary. I always felt cooler growing up tellin people I was from the home of the Jackson 5 (and plus it was a way to avoid saying it was the former murder capitol lol).

I never met him, or had a personal relationship with him, but am still affected by this deeply because we all knew him... thru his story, music, and legacy. I used to study his videos, and notice I still cant moonwalk haha. I used to run out of the room when the "Thriller" video came on cuz I was sooooo scared! I used to watch old footage of his concerts in awe and ask my mom "Why are those women crying and fainting?" Hahaha! And to this day, there hasnt been a single week in my life when one of his songs hasnt come up on my iPod or his name come up in conversation between me and my friends. For cryin out loud DARKCHILD produced for him! Michael Jackson was still freakin COOL and smooth as ever in the "You Rock My World" video! That was on BET when I was in middle school! He is timeless!

I just think that its sooo funny how the media hasnt had anything good to say about Michael Jackson for years, but now its all tributes and memories since his passing. I have never had an opinion about his court cases or plastic surgey or anything. All I know is there will never be another "King Of Pop".

Jay-Z's latest track from The Blueprint 3, "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)"

I log on Twitter from a late afternoon nap to see whats new, and I see all these posts about Jay-Z. So instantly, I'm like "Oh snap! Its gotta be something huge about my part-time favorite rapper!" Anybody that knows me, knows I'm a HUGE Jay fan, from Reasonable Doubt to American Gangster.

I research a lil more on the Twitter and soon find out Jay just leaked a new song...

I quickly find it on zshare, (cuz yall know its gon be deleted pretty soon), and listen to its about 4 times back to back.

I expected Jay to be using auto tune, or something crazy, with some really different sounding beat, and him really commenting on how certain artists KILL auto tune

But NOPE

Honestly, to me (lemme remind u this is MY opinion), its the same ole Jay. Crazy soul sample, him snappin about somethin, doin his Hov thing. Dont get me wrong tho...

PLEASE listen to it. This is what pissed me off even more. Cuz it sounds like some OLD HEAD rap niggaz SNAPPIN on these young kats tryna follow the NEXT hottest trend in not only Hip Hop, but MUSIC. What some people fail to realize, is that the key in music's progression is evolution. People feed off each other in music, and as a result new sub genres are created, characteristics from older periods of music re-emerge with new characteristics, etc etc. Its has never progressed by people tryna to REMAIN stuck and set in their ways. Cuz what happens then?? That artist than becomes irrelevant.

The whole time in the interview Jay talkin bout leavin the auto-tune trend and pretty much how its waaaay overused. I get that what he is trying to is encourage the CONTINUING GROWTH of Hip Hop. Yet he tries to accomplish that by rappin with the same style he been doin FOREVER! Soul sample, and a sub-par hook. Just bein real. A lil contradictory my nigga.

And lemme say that I do agree auto-tune is overused, but everyone knows the newest, hottest sh** is always overused. Remember crunk music and snap music, whatever....?? GAWWD I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER END! But rest assured, the people doing it right WILL survive and will be the ones remembered for it. Cmon Jay, Kanye T-Pain and Lil Wayne aint gon be the only ones who go down in history as the Hip Hop artists that perfected auto tune.

I was just tweetin with Tatiana from CultureShockMag.Com and told her people are finally learning how to use auto-tune right. Instead of niggaz tryna copy Wayne's style of rappin (wailing with it) or instead of copying T-Pain's use of it (singing it on hooks) people are making it more relevant and using it effectively now. (That Drake sh** was ARTISTIC, MAN! The new Black Eyed Peas joints are CRAZY!) Lemme stress, MOST PEOPLE. Not all. But music has been headed in the techno/electronic/Euro-pop direction for a while. We hear its influence on all the singles and everything nowadays. And this is just the beginning.

ANYWAY, Thats my 95 cents on this issue, forget all that 2 cents nonsense. Sometimes an nigga gotta speak his WHOLE mind!

THROW YOUR J'S UP!

As an artist, Its a humbling experience to hear a song or project that another artists releases and admit to yourself its a BILLION times better than anything you have done.

And the Jaspects have just humbled me....

Their latest project, "The Polkadotted Stripe", is inspiring, innovative, and artistic. And I mean artistic in a Shakespeare/Picasso-type way. Its ridiculous. I haven't been so inspired in a while. And lately I've just been on some "different" stuff for my music fix. Artists like The Bird and the Bee and Sondre Lerche. Cuz quite frankly, regular old Hip Hop and R&B just doesn't cut it for me on the inspiration tip anymore. It doesn't really contribute to my GROWTH as an artist. Yeeeaaaa suuuure every so often I'll hear a new song on the radio I'm feeling, go illegally download it, bump it on my iPod for a week or two, then trash it. But I'm talkin more about the songs you can study, learn from, emulate, and even ... thats the type of music I'm on a never-ending quest for (dang that just reminded me about that movie Never Ending Story, with that big fluffy flying thing... I used to LOVE that movie!)

And Jaspects have produced a work of ART. My band Biscuits and Gravy had the opportinuty to open up for them when they played in Nashville at B.B. Kings, and I consider myself acquaintances of theirs. My band has always viewed them as our "big brothers" with them being a dope band making their name blending Jazz and Hip Hop. But anyway, that particular night I wasn't feeling too well, the my band didn't perform as good as we should have, so I just went home before their set. So I didn't even realize they had a released a new album!

A new friend of mine that I made from Twitter (lol.. my first Twitter friend btw) Ms. Beezy, posted a review about their album on her blog a few weeks back, and this was the first time I was able to preview a few tracks from the album. And I was blown awwaaaay. I copped the album immediately after.

The way in which "The Polkadotted Stripe" differs from the previous Jaspects albums is that it blends the Jazz aspect of their music so deceptively and intricately in their songs, that a non musician, or musically inclined listener can't obviously point it out. Each song is soooo detailed, from the instrumentataion, vocals, and the even the specifics of the engineering aspects (like the levels, automation, auto-tune, etc.). Its such a progressive album for the hip hop sub genre which has been emerging in the past couple years. I took notes the entire time I listened to the album. I DEFINITELY have to step my game up.

Even the album features are perfect. Janelle Monae and PJ Morton alone were enough to draw me in when I read the track titles.

I want you all to make your own opinion of the music, so I wont go into detail about my favorite tracks or what I didn't like, cause sometimes I can spoil the listeners experience (hey atleast Im honest!). But definitely go cop "The Polkadotted Stripe". Its a worthy purchase for Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, and even the "out-there" lovers like me.

The more I listen to all these ATL artists on the rise like Proton, Hollyweerd, and the Jaspects, the more I wanna just pack up everything and move to the A-town so I can start soakin up whatever they got!

Best believe, my newest goal for the year is to try and collab with these kats. And trust me, its loooong overdue

Pixar has done it again....

UP is the freakin dopest movie I've seen in a minute. I dont think Pixar has had a bad movie yet. Since Toy Story they have created a reputation of making movies with great story lines and their innovative computer graphics, which get even better each film.

I just saw the midnight film at the Opry Mills theater in 3D! It was CRAZY! My only complaint was that I wish I saw it in IMAX on the HUGE screen. But oh well..

MY BAAAAAAND!!!!

Alot of ppl been askin questions bout my band The Legendary Biscuits and Gravy. For those that arent familiar with them, they are the reason I've have a name for myself in Nashville period and have the opportunities forwarded to me that I do now.

Seems like for a while now we have been on hiatus. There is no other way to look at it. Our buzz has sorta died down, we dont even have a CD, EP or anything to show for, and even our local popularity is beginning to fade.

Why??? Well its a long story. But despite everything that has happend, i still remain so optimistic in my bands future. My solo stuff is always something I can go as far as I choose and venture and do whatever, but BAG is my heart

Just a quick history of my band>>>

Back in high school, beginning late Sophomore year, i started takin my music more serious and started recording and doin small shows like churches or school events. Then I started interning at Rocketown my senior year, but my solo stuff never did quite take off like I wanted to. I started my first band "Improv, Lyrics, and Life" with some friends at my high school. After a few talent shows wins and church performances tho, the group broke up. My second band tho, started with just me and some friends on keys messing around at my internship at Rocketown after school. And what started out as just something to kill time, became The Legendary Biscuits and Gravy.

We went from Rocketown open mic nights for metro students, quickly to Cafe Coco monthly open mic events makin $200+ a night off tips. It was crazy. Even though this may seem like nothing, it was alot for me to take in. Cuz as a teen i used to think the hardest thing was gettin a show at a local venue for a semi-packed crowed just to hear my songs. And all of a sudden, me and my friends were the new buzz and talk of the town. Young kids from ages 12-17 playin everything from jazz and old school r&b to hip hop and funk. And people were eatin it up.

In the few months since we started we went from playin lil old Kijiji's (remember that place on Jefferson St lol) to Cafe Coco, then to Gibson Showcase for a local television taping. Everybody locally was showing us love. The Tennesean, all the local music papers. It was crazy. People were blowin our myspace up, tryna book us for weddings, banquets, everything u could think of. I swear we were freakin local celebrities! "Arent u in that band Biscuits and Gravy?? Yea I saw yall in the paper!" It was crazy!!

As great as it was tho, it was happening way too fast for us to comprehend. Our buzz was growing faster than we were maturing mentally and even musically. In all honesty we were a glorified Jam band. And we could play the hell out of covers. But besides that, our overall musicality and my lyricism werent advancing enough to meet the demands of the bigger audiences we were being exposed to. A year after BAG started, we had already played every major local venue twice over, but maybe only had 3 or 4 new songs to add to our catalog.

The funny thing about BAG is that we go thru phases. All of that was phase 1. From 2006 to the end of 2007. We went on a Lovenoise tour in a couple of surrounding states in the summer of 2007. It seemed like things were really taking off, but they werent. I dont think thats anyones fault, but I can speak for the whole band and say we started takin opportunities like tours and being so well known locally for granted after a while. We expected a certain level of recognition but yet didnt put in work to keep it or advance that recognition. So what happened was, we got stuck. Stuck in Nashville. Stuck in out mindsets of us EXPECTING to get signed or something, but not really working towards it like we should have.

So it depressed us.

It slowed down our progress even more. Practices were canceled more often. I started focusin on my solo stuff more than the band cuz it was just at a weird stage. I needed to be on stage more and we werent performing as much as we used to. More priorities were taking place of the band, which is necessary, but there should have been a better balance. I was in my freshman yr of college by then and I started flunking. A few other members did too. So our buzz sort of staled off

2008 began phase 2 for BAG. This was the transitional phase. We were all a lil older and could really look at things in perspective and see mistakes we made and what we could have done better to get the band where we all wanted to be, which was to a label or some opportunity to launch us regionally, nationally, internationally, etc etc. The shows kept coming, we stayed meeting key people, execs, producers, we always do big name shows, or open up for big artist. But the difference this time around, is that we realize those shows really dont amount to as much as we used to think. Who cares we opened up at a Kanye West after party, who cares we did the Nappy Roots show, Jazzy Jeff, met this person, that person, etc. What my band members and I have learned from the past 3 yrs in the band is the way the industry works, and its more complicated than we thought. I remember when we met Kanye we were just so positive that if he heard a SECOND of us playing he would sign us immediately. LOL well he was there when we played, but he didnt pay any attention hahaha.

In the same vein, an industry person can tell us a million things and get all our hopes up about what he or she will do for us and how big we'll be, but in the end dont follow thru with any of it. So it has taught us to not be satisfied for doin a big show or meeting a industry exec or somebody famous. Its just another notch on our belts. But we have learned to have tough skin. Thats the main thing. No matter what, keep improving, keep practicing, keep writing, keep perfecting our craft. Cuz even when we do get signed, its just another chapter in our careers. There is never a reason to be content and settle with our current skill level or popularity.

So this begins phase 3, which I believe begins this week. The band is on the verge of a HUGE comeback. New songs, new image, new level of hype, overall new mindset. And Im soooo excited to see where this phase leads us, because Im confident we are headed in the right direction. So look out for us yall, we are bout to hit yall SOOOOO FREAKIN HAARRRRDDD!!!!!
